EQUATION FOR CHANGE

Within RapidChange Therapy the behavioral change process is envisioned as being comprised of four interrelated components: Space, Data, Shift, and Change - the RCT Equation for Change.

RapidChange Therapy (RCT) Equation for Change

SPACE + DATA + SHIFT = CHANGE

SPACE - refers to the psychological climate in which DATA is presented and received. To achieve this climate, the RCT therapist communicates genuine interest in the individual's history, his story, his uniqueness. CHANGE is facilitated when an individual feels validated and his beliefs and feelings understood and respected. If there is an absence of SPACE there is no room for CHANGE.

DATA - information presented and received in the psychological climate necessary for change. It consists of input from both client and the therapist. Client DATA emerges from an exploration of his thoughts, feelings, perceptions, attitudes, beliefs, and desires. Therapist DATA assists the client in defining personal goals and helping him design a strategy for achieving them, a strategy that will include identifying obstacles, internal and external, and developing methods for overcoming them.

SHIFT - a shift in perception, a change in what and how an individual thinks about, understands, or "sees" their experience and environment. This SHIFT is a change in the interpretations, meanings, and conclusions the individual derives from an experience, and ultimately a change in beliefs and states of mind.

CHANGE - that which results from the interrelationship and interplay of the psychological dynamics of SPACE, DATA, and SHIFT.

The creation of SPACE facilitates an individuals' willingness to open his "self" to another. This openness allows an exchange of DATA between the individual and therapist that reveals the path and process of change. The exchange of DATA then brings about a SHIFT in the individual's perception of himself, his experiences, and his interpersonal world.
